Emotions Run High As Officer Involved Car Wrecks Spike

Huntsville, AL - Over the past few weeks, we've seen several wrecks involving Huntsville Police Officers. Three of them have been serious, and the most recent killed a mother of three, who was expecting her fourth child.

While no one questions that police officers risk their lives to keep us safe, many in the community are now wondering why they are involved in so many auto accidents.

"(In) the last two months, we've had 25 accidents" admits Huntsville Police spokesman Harry Hobbs. "But 14 of those accidents were just little fender benders, and out of those 25 only 11 were at fault to the police officer that maybe could have been avoided."

For many people, those 11 where and officer was at fault is 11 too many. But Hobbs insists when you factor in the fact that many patrol officers are in their cars for hours at a time without a wreck, the numbers aren't as bad as they seem.

Unfortunately, accidents do happen. One such accident that happened Friday night proved deadly.

Decatur Man Says Work Release Inmates Kidnapped Him

Thomas Terrell enjoys watching television inside his Decatur home. He appreciates moments like this, now more than ever before. That's because he says two Decatur Work Release inmates kidnapped him at his home Monday night.

"I went to the store, a local supermarket about a mile away. I came back and pulled into my carport and opened the door. The Moore guy grabbed my arm and told me to get out of the car and give him my keys," says Terrell.

The two men police are looking for are 44 year old Danny Moore and 27 year old Brenton Smith.

Terrell says the men took him all the way to Muscle Shoals before they parked behind the Days Inn on Woodward Avenue.

Terrell desperately wanted to escape and said he kept asking to use a nearby restroom.

He says he went back to the car two times but on the third trip to the restroom he kept walking and saw a privacy fence leading to a home.

"I went around the fence and realized it was somebody's back yard. I was going to start banging on doors but I heard voices. Three guys were sitting on the porch and once I got my breath back I told them to call 911," says Terrell.

When police arrived at the Days Inn, Moore and Smith had already driven off in Terrell's car.

Now police try to find the two alleged kidnappers.

"If they would abandon the car they were in and either tried to acquire another car or just go into a location, it's not very easy to find someone that doesn't want to be located," says Muscle Shoals Police Chief Robert Evans.

As for Terrell, other than being a little shaken, he'll be okay.

"Glad it's over with and see how long it will take me to go to sleep."

8 shot, 4 fatally, outside Buffalo, NY, restaurant

BUFFALO, N.Y. -Eight people leaving a party at a downtown Buffalo restaurant were shot early Saturday, four of them fatally, including a Texas man who had returned to his hometown to celebrate his first wedding anniversary, police said.
Managers had decided to close the City Grill in the city's business district after an altercation inside. The victims were leaving at about 2:30 a.m. when a man who had been inside began shooting, police said.
"There were verbal things going on. Management apparently chose to close down and have everybody leave the restaurant," Chief of Detectives Dennis Richards said. "People were leaving when this shooting happened."
Keith Johnson, 25, of Buffalo was charged Saturday afternoon with four counts of second-degree murder and could face more charges. Johnson was in custody late Saturday afternoon and unavailable for comment.
Police didn't know whether Johnson was involved in the earlier altercation and asked witnesses to speak up.
"We need people to come forward," said Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda, who estimated there were 100 people at the scene when police arrived.
The group was attending a party in advance of a more formal anniversary celebration scheduled for later Saturday, authorities said. The couple, Danyell Mackin, 30, and his wife, Tanisha, married in Texas a year ago and had returned to celebrate with Buffalo-area friends and family, authorities said. Tanisha Mackin was not hurt.
"An occasion that should have been a joyous one, a happy one, turned tragic," Mayor Byron Brown said Saturday near the restaurant, a popular stop for office workers during the week and people attending theater and sporting events at night.
The Mackins, who grew up in the same neighborhood, had been friends since they were 13 and started dating in 2001, according to a website created to commemorate their marriage and provide details about the celebration.
The couple, known as "Dee" and "Tee," have a 6-year-old son, Danyell Jr., and a 7-month-old daughter, Destinee, who was scheduled to be christened on Sunday, the website said. The family had moved from Buffalo to Austin, Texas, in 2006, and the Mackins worked for a local bank.
The reception was to be held at a community center in Buffalo, and the couple said online that it was "dedicated to the people who meant so much to us and that we lost."
Police identified the other three victims as Willie McCaa III, 26; Shawnita McNeil, 27; and Tiffany Wilhite, 32.
"A senseless, random killing," said Wilhite's father, Raymond Wilhite, who returned to the restaurant a few hours after the shooting. "This kind of thing just has to stop."
McNeil was Wilhite's cousin.
"There's no words to explain how I feel," McNeil's mother, Ruby Martin, said. "She got along with everybody. She knows a lot of people. She didn't deserve to be killed. I'm pretty sure it wasn't intended for her."
Demario Vass, 30, remained in critical condition Saturday night, police spokesman Michael DeGeorge said. Two men, James Robb Jr., 27, and Shamar Davis, 30, were in stable condition. And 27-year-old Tillman Ward, who was shot in the elbow, was in good condition.
Tommy Dates, 35, of Buffalo, said he was at the bar area of the restaurant with his friends when he noticed a party had broken up. He said people started leaving the restaurant but rushed back inside a few minutes later.
"A lot of people were real upset, just trying to get out of the way," Dates said at the scene about two hours after the shootings. "Everyone was in a panic."
Johnson lives in a two-family house about six miles from the restaurant, near the University of Buffalo's south campus. No one responded to a knock on his door Saturday night, and a woman who answered the door of the other family's home said he lives with his mother and that she also left with police when Johnson was taken into custody.
The restaurant posted a statement on its website Saturday expressing condolences to the victims and their families.
"We at City Grill are deeply saddened by the tragic events," the statement said.
Three covered bodies lay in front of the restaurant for several hours, one of them on the sidewalk across the street. About 20 people stood behind yellow crime scene tape, some trying to console grief-stricken relatives and friends.
"It was horrible seeing members of our community lying in the street," the mayor said.
The window of an office next to the Main Street restaurant was shattered, as was glass at a light-rail stop across the street.
"Nobody knows why," Martin said. "Somebody else was just shooting in a crowd."
Associated Press Writer Ben Dobbin contributed to this report.

Family Members : Accused Shooter Still Threatening Us

On Thursday afternoon, three people were shot at a home on Cave Avenue in Huntsville. Police say Undre Gardner pulled the trigger, and fled. He's still on the loose Friday evening, and now family members of the victim say Gardner is still calling them, making threats.

Adriane Malone tells WAAY 31 that Gardner has called her twice, saying she should have been shot during Thursday's altercation. Despite the threats, Malone is happy that no one in her family was killed. Now, she wants the man brought to justice. "All I want is for him to be caught" said Adriane Malone. "Or find a hole and bury himself or pull the trigger on himself. I don't wish no bad thing on any one, but its what he did and he didn't have to do that."

"God was with me, yeah God was with me" said 16 year old Diandra Williams. She was shot in the thigh, and says doctors told her the bullet would have to stay there for now. "They said they can't take it out because it hit a muscle. And they said if they take it out it might bleed. So they're
going to leave it in there and I'll later go back to the doctor." Police believe Gardner came to the home looking for Diandra's sister.

Family members say they heard a total of six shots fired during the incident. Two other people - a 20 year old man, and a four year old girl, were also hit by the gunfire. The man has been released from the hospital, the girl remains there, in good condition.

If you have any information on where Gardner might be, call police immediately.

Police Bust Cross Dressing Thieves at Boaz Wal Mart

Some very odd suspects went through the Boaz City Police Department earlier this week.

Investigators received a call on Sunday afternoon from Wal-Mart security guards that they'd spotted some unusual people stealing cell phones from the store. What was so unusual? According to Boaz Police spokesman Terry Davis - "There was a black female, two black males dressed as females, and two black males shoplifting merchandise".

When police got there, they say they found 19 cell phones, still in the packaging on the cross dressing crooks and their alleged accomplices.

As detectives did further investigation into the case, they came to believe that the group had been pulling similar heists around the south. Davis says the suspects are now linked to cell phone thefts in Guntersville and Snellville, Georgia as well. Investigators are working with Wal-Mart and local police departments in several other cities to see if the group could be responsible for other crimes as well.

The suspects have been identified as :

18 year old Trevor Baker of Huntsville

21 year old Terrell Jolly of Huntsville, one of the cross dressing males.

23 year old Jarquez Dancy of Huntsville, one of the cross dressing males.

19 year old Precious Humphrey of Huntsville, the lone female.

The 5th suspect is an unidentified juvenile.

Officials: 3 arrested in Norway al-Qaida bomb plot

OSLO -Three suspected al-Qaida members were arrested Thursday morning in what Norwegian and U.S. officials said was a terrorist plot linked to similar plans in New York and England.
The three men, whose names were not released, had been under surveillance for more than a year. Officials believe they were planning attacks with portable but powerful bombs like the ones at the heart of last year's thwarted suicide attack in the New York City subway.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has called that one of the most serious terrorist plots since 9/11. On Wednesday, prosecutors revealed the existence of a related plot in Manchester, England. Officials believe the Norway plan was organized by Salah al-Somali, al-Qaida's former chief of external operations, the man in charge of plotting attacks worldwide.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case. The Norwegian Police Security Service said only that the three were arrested on suspicion of "preparing terror activities."
Al-Somali, who was killed in a CIA drone airstrike last year, has been identified in U.S. court documents as one of the masterminds of the New York subway plot. Two men have pleaded guilty in that case, admitting they planned to detonate explosives during rush hour. A third man awaits trial.
A news conference was planned for later Thursday.
Officials said it was not clear the men had selected a target for the attacks but they were attempting to make peroxide bombs, the powerful homemade explosives that prosecutors say were attempted in both New York and England.
U.S. and Norwegian counterterrorism officials worked closely together to unravel the Norwegian plot, officials said. Janne Kristiansen, the head of the Police Security Service, traveled to the U.S. this spring to discuss some of the closely held intelligence that been gathered in the case.
In Washington, Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd had no comment.
Officials did not say why Norway was a target, but al-Qaida No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahri has called for attacks on Norway, among other countries.
Magnus Norell, a terrorism expert at the Swedish Defense Research Agency, said Norway's 500 troops in Afghanistan could be a factor, as could the 2006 controversy sparked by a Danish newspaper's publication of 12 cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.
Norell said the controversy has extended to neighboring Norway and Sweden after newspapers there republished the cartoons and later published similar cartoons. Images of Muhammad, even favorable ones, are considered blasphemous by many Muslims.
Apuzzo and Goldman reported from Washington.

Kennedy docs show death threats as late as 1985

WASHINGTON -FBI records show there were death threats against then-Sen. Edward Kennedy even five years after his failed 1980 White House bid.
Previously secret files released Monday showed that on May 23, 1985, the U.S. Capitol Police passed onto the FBI a copy of a letter sent to the Secret Service, ostensibly by a Warren, Mich., resident. The sender, whose name was redacted, declared: "Brass tacks, I'm gonna kill Kennedy and (President Ronald) Reagan, and I really mean it."
The FBI considered the sender armed and dangerous, but an accompanying psychological analysis said she was "merely ventilating her frustrations and projecting her inadequacies." The late Sen. Kennedy, who served in the Senate for nearly half a century, died in August 2009 after a yearlong struggle with brain cancer.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Most of the secret FBI files on the late Sen. Edward Kennedy being released Monday concern death threats against the longtime senator.
Alex Brown of the FBI's records management division said the FBI would post some 2,000 pages of previously secret pages about the Massachusetts Democrat on the agency's website.
The release of the documents has been highly anticipated by historians, scholars and others interested in the life and long public career of one of America's most prominent and powerful politicians.
The Associated Press and other media organizations requested the documents through Freedom of Information Act requests.
Kennedy faced death threats when he ran for president in 1980 and before that in the years following the assassinations of his older brothers.
President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963. U.S. Sen. Robert F. Kennedy was slain in Los Angeles on June 6, 1968.
The deaths of his two older brothers cast a long shadow on Kennedy's life, and prompted fears he too would be targeted by an assassin's bullet.
After his brothers' assassinations, Kennedy wrote in his memoir "True Compass" released last year, that he was easily startled at loud sounds, and would hit the deck whenever a car backfired.
Kennedy, who served in the Senate for nearly half a century, died in August 2009 after a yearlong struggle with brain cancer. He was 77 and the last surviving brother of the famed political family.
