Has Sweetwater Gone Sour?

The sign reads 'Coming Soon.'

But the sign has been here for more than two years now.

The sign is on the land near Interstate 65 and Highway 20 in Limestone County near Decatur. It's supposed to be the future home of the Sweetwater complex. The project was announced back in early 2008, and was to include a Bass Pro Shops, hotel and more. But, months later, the economy tanked, and Sweetwater's momentum slowed. Not much has happened since.

Just across the highway, folks who work at Apple Lane Farms Sandwich Shop wonder if the Sweetwater deal has turned sour. They hope the deal is still on.

"We don't do a lot of advertising so we just try to get as many people in here as we can. We have wonderful sandwiches and it would help our business greatly and ensure job security," says Shaun Woodard.

Woodard says he's probably like a lot of people in north Alabama.

He likes to hunt and fish and that's why he was really excited about the possibility of a Bass Pro Shops store coming to his hometown.

"It would be a nice variety for the Bass fishermen for sure. It would be great to have a variety of different thing to see what the pros fish with," Woodard says.

Woodard says he has a strong message to send to the Decatur City Council.

"Please bring them in. We need the business. The economy is low. It can only boost it and more jobs for the town," says Woodard.

But only if and when Sweetwater calls Decatur home.

Decatur mayor Don Stanford says Sweetwater officials still are interested but Stanford says they are waiting on the economy to improve before construction begins.

Tourism Down in Gulf Shores This 4th of July

Even with relatively good beach conditions, over the holiday weekend, the oil spill is keeping many tourists off of the beaches in Gulf Shores.

Fewer tourists means less income for Gulf business owners.

"The Hangout" in Gulf Shores is doing its best to show visitors a good time hoping they will plan a return visit. The owner Shaul Zislin says he's seen a fifty percent drop in business from last year's Fourth of July.

"This is the week that pays then for October, November, December , January and February. So it's not whether your profitable this week but are you profitable enough to then sustain throughout the off season?" says Zislin.

Several other business owners say they've prepared for the worse but hope to recover after the clean-up is completed. They also say for the most part the beaches are fine.

Headache Reliever for Madison Drivers

Madison city officials voted to acquire the right of way for the County Line Road intersection at Interstate 565. It's the beginning of a highly anticipated road project for both drivers and business owners.

Arbor Crossing is one of the many new shopping centers to pop up in Madison on County Line Road. With the grand opening just several weeks away, property owner, Scott Welch, can't wait for the new exit and entrance ramps to be added at the County Line Road interchange.

"Traffic is beginning to be a problem here and so, easier access to get in and off County Line Road and 565 will certainly help me with the renting of my space, I'm sure," said Welch.

The city took the first step in the project by acquiring the right of way at the intersection.
